We have 7 races on engine and getting ready to pull it apart.

We were curious if any ever looks at compression, perhaps with gauge able to show small increments.

Is there such a gauge out there or I guess I can pick up a gauge and modify compression tester.

This is what we saw with throttle wide open in second gear on current gauge:

5 engine rotations = 80 psi

Then moving the car a total of 9 feet produced = 112 psi

Then moving the car a total of 18 feet produced = 180 psi.

Know what compression should be and how best to test for it? Does anyone check prior to rebuild and after rebuild?

Thank you.

Brian

Hello Brian,

We test our compression with throttle plates wide open and use the starter to turn the engine over in neutral. We keep cranking until the gauge doesn't increase anymore. depending on the gauge and engine the compression is usually about 180-220.
